There could have been there, but Capcom really nailed it. RE4 still has it beat when it comes to bosses, variety, and weapons, but as a pure distillation of what makes the old fashion of Resident Evil good, you couldn’t ask for more.
I also like how it is not a servant to the source material, giving old places and experiences a new spin. As Samuel states, it seems like a brand new game: modern and thrilling, however hitting precisely the same beats as the 1998 original.
